Poll Says American Parents Approve of Male Au Pairs!
Our poll results "Would You Hire a Male Au Pair?" are in and our report indicates that American families (63%) are open to hiring a male au pair to care for their children.
These data indicate favorable opinions regarding these young men despite negative news stories about male au pair abusing children in their care. Of course, Cultural Care's male au pair, Ricardo Silva de Araujo, winning the Au Pair of the Year Award, didn't hurt the image of male au pairs! This was a great story of a young man who won the award for his caring and involvement in the life of a special needs teenager.
According to StartAnAupairAgency.co.uk, male au pairs tend to: be less affected by homesickness, are more likely to be drivers, interacts better with other boys, can do heavier work and are less likely to return home before their year is up.
What other kinds of factors might influence a family to either hire or reject a male au pair?

Male au pairs make my life work
Hi, I am a very busy, full time accountant with 3 boys and a single mom! I have had au pairs for several years, and about 3 years ago, I decided to try a male au pair. The first guy was from Sweden and he was an instant hit with my boys. I never realized how badly they needed a male role model. I cried! Steffan was great - he was so positive, worked so hard and loved to take the boys outside every day, and they all played soccer the entire year with him.
My former au pairs, the girls, never liked going outside unless it was to a park or to hike, but they usually went with other au pairs and it became a social thing for them, and the kids were secondary.
I loved all of my au pairs, but boys just work for me. My second male au pair taught my boys to cook and they still maake meals that Jordan taught them. He was willing to do heavy work around the house and I slept better knowing I had a male under my roof.
Our current male au pair is super! He has been tutoring the boys in Math (he is a math teacher) which they all need, and he is a great driver! All of my male au pairs were good, solid drivers.
I do endorse male au pairs - they may not be for everyone, but it has worked for me! Also, they did not have the homesickness all of my female au pairs had - maybe they did, but they kept it under wraps and it never affected their work. Less drama with boys, all around, generally. Love them!
I did take your poll, so, thanks for sharing the results!
You Are Welcome!
Hi singlemom,
So glad to hear your male au pairs are working out for you - I think they are great for single host parents - it is nice to have an extra set of hands to help out and it certainly doesn't hurt to have these "hands" belong to a strong male who can lift heavy cans to the curb, drive and play active sports with the kids!
Also, I would imagine a single host mom would find a male presence in the home comforting (in terms of safety issues)?
Enjoy,
Edina
