CEOs of Au Pair Agencies Weigh in On New Au Pairs Movie to Be Released in 2011
We posted a news story about the new Au Pairs movie to be produced by Drew Barrymore (who also produced He's Just Not that Into You) and directed by R.J. Cutler The movie will be based on a book about a trio of au pair hotties partying on the beaches of the Hamptons while taking care of rich people's children.
Will this movie follow in the footsteps of the Nanny Diaries with Scarlett Johansson (which I actually liked). Or will Au Pairs promise to deliver more sex and flesh than the Nanny Diaries did?
What will the fall-out be for the au pair industry? It really depends on how these three au pairs are portrayed. Will they be just "party girls" out for a "wild and crazy" time while in America, or will they represent what most au pairs are looking for when they join the cultural exchange program (improved English and a better resume to improve their employment prospects)?
I am not sure the director or Ms. Barrymore understand the cultural program as is exists today and I am very curious to see what they do with this movie and their depiction of au pairs.
This movie will have an effect on the au pair industry, but we have to wait with bated breath to find out what the end result will be: negative or positive?
We invited CEOs Mark Gaulter from goAUPAIR and Tom Areton from CHI AuPair USA to respond and this is what they had to say about the new movie, Au Pairs, that will be released in 2011:
Mark Gaulter, CEO of Expert Au Pair, shares his thoughts about The Au Pairs movie and hopes that it will expose more American families to the cultural exchange program:
"Of course the film isn't in theaters, and nobody has invited Expert AuPair's staff to the premiere yet, but based on the synopsis this appears to be a much better story than it is a documentary about au pairs. From what I can tell, only one of the au pairs in The Au Pairs is from outside the US, and all spend more time enjoying the party scene than they spend watching children. Any of our au pairs would tell you this is unrealistic -- while being an au pair is often fun and is certainly rewarding, it is also hard work.
Of course, the fact that the movie probably won't be realistic isn't necessarily a bad thing, as stories are often best told with at least a little exaggeration. Even if the movie is laced with sex and alcohol use -- and it may not be -- the audience will be discerning enough to realize that one film, about domestic nannies and au pairs, discredits neither individual childcare in general, nor the au pair option in particular. One just has to think back to when Adventures in Babysitting came out in the late 80s -- a babysitter and the children in her charge ended up in a fraternity house in the middle of the night after wrecking the family car and being shot at by the owner of a tow truck, and yet I don't think people stopped hiring teenaged babysitters.
If The Au Pairs causes even a few families to sit down and take a closer look at the au pair program then it could, in fact, be a positive for those of us who believe that one of the greatest gifts you can give your children, is the gift of a global perspective."

Deborah Herlocker, Operations Manager of CHI Au Pair USA, sent us this response from CHI au pair's top management:
CHI Au Pair USA CEO, Tom Areton, told aupairclearinghouse, "...it will be good the term Au Pair will become more familiar." However, he fears the movie may send the wrong impression of what the Au Pair program truly is, as it may not be a true representation of Au Pairs or typical Host Families.

Au pairs are not all "hotties" trying to get "some"
I really do hope that they do not portray these au pairs as "bad" girls who seduce the husbands and fathers and any other male on the block. It would be unfortunate because most au pairs are not like that!!!
Working parents, like me, need these girls to help out around the house and mind the children - I work hard and long hours and without a husband, these au pairs are my saviours!
I could not afford a nanny and need live-in and I could NEVER afford daycare for 3 kids!
new movie
Great blog, I love hearing from the agencies, you don't always get to hear their feedback on things that might affect families (and au pairs). I think, without question, the movie, The Au Pairs, will be popular and will bring to the American public, the idea and concept of au pairs.
I do think that depending on the depiction of the au pairs, American parents may be either turned off by the idea of hiring a young foreigner to care for their children, or embrace the idea and even try it out (in large numbers that did not exist before).
Agencies and CEOs will only have to wait, with bated breath, to see what kind of impact this movie will have on the au pair business!
