New Movie based on Book about Au Pairs Partying in Hamptons
We posted a news story today about the new Au Pairs movie to be produced by Drew Barrymore (who also produced He's Just Not that Into You) and directed by R.J. Cutler The movie will be based on a book about a trio of au pair hotties partying on the beaches of the Hamptons while taking care of rich people's children. Will this movie follow in the footsteps of the Nanny Diaries with Scarlett Johansson (which I actually liked). Or does Au Pairs promise to deliver more sex and flesh than the Nanny Diaries did?
What will the fall-out be for the au pair industry? It really depends on how these three au pairs are portrayed. Will they be just "party girls" out for a "wild and crazy" time while in America, or will they represent what most au pairs are looking for when they join the cultural exchange program (improved English and a better resume to improve their employment prospects)?
I am not sure the director or Ms. Barrymore understand the cultural program as is exists today and I am very curious to see what they do with this movie and their depiction of au pairs. This movie will have an effect on the au pair industry, but we have to wait with bated breath to find out what the end result will be: negative or positive?
In any case, it will bring attention to the idea of au pairs as a viable childcare option, and this can only help the industry as a whole. R.J. Cutler, the well known and acclaimed director, is known for his documentaries of American life. He directed the War Room, a documentary about Bill Clinton and his run for the presidency. American High was a documentary television show about the lives of students at Highland Park High School. It was picked up by PBS and aired in its entirety and received the 2001 Emmy Award for Outstanding Non-Fiction Program.
This movie will be interesting!

I am looking forward to this movie
I think the movie will be fun to watch, but I also do not think it will be a postive experience for the American public. The nanny diaries was a postive one for nannies, but it seems that this book, Au Pairs, is not a postive depiction of au pairs at all!
I'm not optomistic
I think this movie is going to just add to some of the common misperceptions about the au pair program, unless the film differs a lot from the book it is based on. From looking at some descriptions of the book, it doesn't sound like it's about "au pairs" at all -- I think maybe the author picked that name because "au pairs" sounds kind of exotic (and The Nanny Diaries was taken). It sounds to me like the girls in the book are American girls (I take that back -- two are American, one is from Brazil), looking for a cushy summer job hanging out in the Hamptons. And unfortunately, I think it may contribute to the misconception that only very wealthy families (who don't want to spend time with their children) have au pairs, and/or that all au pairs are sexy hotties looking for a good time. I don't think we'll be seeing much "cultural exchange" at all.
I guess we'll see, but I am not at all optimistic!
I love RJ Cutler's Work!!
Yes this will be very interesting! My question is: will he be doing a documentary (and follow real au pairs in real-life families) or is a fictional story based "loosely" (ha ha, pun intended) on the book?
And why would he do that? Seems beneath him somehow. There has got to be more to this story and this movie. I really like Culter's work. I especially liked War Room.
Au Pair Movie
Harris32, yes I have seen War Room and liked it very much, but I don't think this movie will be a documentation. Not a good use of Cutler's area of expertise and award winning skills doing documentaries!
Will watch it when it comes out and as Edina said, this movie could have positive (or negative) consequences on the au pair industry, depending on how they decide to portray au pairs!
If the producers push this movie as much as they did their first one (He is Just Not that into You) millions of Americans will see this film and make a decision, pro or con, on au pairs in general, which is too bad! I hope they get it right and not all au pairs (the majority of them) DO NOT come here to party.
Au pairs are hard working girls who want a better life and use the cultural exchange program to expand their cultural and educational horizons and get a better job (and life) once they return to their country.
For parents like me, they are a tremendous help at a moderate priced salary as we try to support our families and get our kids to school, etc., while we are at work!
Au Pair Movie
I agree with Patty. I've read the book, and it is really more of a fantasy of what some people imagine au pairs to be, rather than what those of us who know the program and its participants know is real. First of all, while I know some families that host 2 au pairs because of multiple children or longer work hours by the parents, 3 (as in the book) seems really exaggerated, and two of the girls aren't from out of the country; one is actually friends with many of the upper class young adults who are vacationing in the Hamptons with their families and whom would never dream of working). Of course, it makes for a more dramatic story than our actual lives, but people definitely will not come away with good opinions of au pairs, unless the film deviates greatly from the book plot (and I use that term loosely!)
Au Pairs & Sex
MadreDeDos,
I think you are so right, it will be a much more dramatic story than our actual, boring lives in suburbia and with lots more nudity and sex! And that is just why we will go and see it!! I am curious now, I probably will read the book (as I am sure many will once they hear about the movie release).
When in 2011 will the movie come out? Does anyone know?
"Au Pairs" Book
Hi MadreDeDos,
I have not read the book, maybe I should. What I cannot figure out yet is why would an award winning director, of acclaimed documentaries, would desire to get involved in this movie? Somehow I feel they are going to do something different from the book and maybe the film will be a documentation of host families and their au pairs!
Now, that would be interesting! Americans would get a real and close-up view of life within a busy, working family who gets by (just) with the help and extra hands of young, eager people from overseas.
It could be a great human interest story, if they get it right.
