LITCHFIELD — A plea agreement may be reached in the case brought against a New Milford man accused of sexually assaulting a nanny in his employ.
Assistant State’s Attorney Dawn Gallo indicated Friday that the state made an offer in the case against Muhammed Atif Bhatti, charged in January with first-degree sexual assault and third-degree sexual assault.
Bhatti was ordered to appear in court on Nov. 10 to accept or reject the state’s offer. If the defendant rejects the plea agreement, the case will be scheduled for trial.
Bhatti’s attorney, James Diamond, indicated the victim may be hiring her own attorney to represent her while she resides in Slovakia.
Police allege that Bhatti told the 20-year-old au pair that she had to take off her clothes for inspection before she went swimming with the family at a New Milford pool in November, police said. Later Bhatti told her two tests were needed for herpes before they could return to the pool and forcefully administered the “tests” in her bedroom, using Vagisil and a Q-tip, according to an arrest warrant affidavit.
Bhatti has since been ordered to stay out of Slovakia. He is allowed to travel for employment purposes.
Police seized records from the agency that referred the au pair to the Bhatti family.
According to the arrest warrant, New Milford police discovered the Bhatti family had hired seven young women from the company since 2005.
Four of the young women came to the United States from Germany, Poland and Brazil to work, responding to advertisements they saw in magazines and on the Internet.
Four out of five of the young women reported being uncomfortable or cited specific incidents with Bhatti. One nanny said nothing unusual happened at the Bhatti home during her stay.

Au Pair Clearinghouse Note: Mr. Bhatti was a host father with Cultural Care Au Pair Agency and the au pair was placed in his home by Cultural Care. The 19 year-old au pair has returned home to Slovakia and Mr. Bhatti has been ordered by the courts to stay out of that country because the au pair is reported to have said she is "afraid for my life" because she reported the abuse to Milford, CT police.
