Au Pairs Learn Self Defense
Wicked Local Lexington - In an effort to keep young adults visiting Lexington from overseas safe, Cultural Care Au Pair partnered last week with Callahan’s Karate to hold a self-defense workshop.
“These young men and women work so hard all day to keep the children they care for safe,” said local childcare coordinator Katrina Ohl. “We decided it was time to show them how to keep themselves safe.”
There were 10 au pairs from Lexington who attended the workshop, representing Mexico, Columbia, Brazil and Germany. Ohl, their local coordinator, supports Lexington-area parents and au pairs, advising them of educational opportunities, offering on-going childcare safety meetings on topics like water, fire, poison prevention and bike/car safety as well as organizing fun activities for the entire extended family to enjoy.
“I had so much fun,” said Betty Schuett, a German au pair who takes care of two young children in Lexington. “My host kids now think I can protect them from bad guys!”
Since 1989, Cultural Care Au Pair has placed more than 60,000 au pairs in welcoming American homes. For more information about hosting an au pair, call Ohl at 781-259-3109.
